Fair Work Australia (FWA) released its decision today on the National Minimum Wage, increasing the rate by $19.40 per week ($0.51 per hour), equating to a 3.4% rise. FWA stated that they believed "a significant increase is appropriate which will improve the real value of award wages and assist the living standards of the low paid".
The decision lifts the National Minimum Wage from $569.90 ($15.00 an hour) to $589.30 ($15.51 an hour) and the increase takes effect from the first full pay period on or after 1 July 2011.
This increase will flow to the rates outlined in industrial awards and the Fair Work Ombudsman’s Office has advised that they will update all the published industrial award information “as soon as possible”.
Employers are also reminded that the next stage of the transitional phasing in provisions contained in the new modern awards also commences on 1 July 2011. This will affect many employers who are currently phasing in penalty rate and other increases that occurred when the new awards were introduced.
All employers are advised to check their payroll obligations, in light of this announcement, to make sure they are meeting their employment responsibilities.
